                                Vision and Leadership

This week Pastor Archie Mason from Central Baptist spoke to us about vision.  We weren't prepared for the wealth of knowledge he gave to us!  Most of our time was spent trying to scribble down as much as we could of what he was saying.  He spent much of his time telling us what vision is, and how it functions in relationship with leadership.

                                Vision defined:
"Vision is a preferred future, that's better than the present, constructed by a mental picture of what you want something to look like. Vision also outlines the path and direction you are going, while acting as a drawstring to pull people together in a common focus."

Vision creates tension between present reality and preferred future.  We must be intentional to stay the course or we will be pulled back to a comfortable present.

                                • Vision is a starting point
                                • Vision keeps you pointed in the right direction
                                • Vision brings others along with you (as opposed to driving them along forcefully)
                                • Vision provides a plan - work it
                                • Vision is the end result

                                The functions of vision:
                                • Vision unites people around a common cause
                                • Vision gives people a sense of purpose
                                • Vision keeps you going through the storms
                                • Vision energizes
                                • Vision focuses priorities
                                • Vision serves as a standard
                                • Vision attracts other people:  Leaders attract Leaders.  Winners attract everybody

                                Action Steps

Every week we try to boil down the concepts into some practical next steps.  This week Archie challenged us to do the following:
                                • If your vision is not clearly defined, begin now to create one that is meaningful and will do what we talked about above.
                                • Once defined, quiz each other in your organization and see if you can clearly articulate your organization's vision statement.
